Research conducted in collaboration with sports science students from the Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences (HAN) yielded positive observations and results. For example, one of the conclusions was that HoloMoves can make a positive contribution to both the physical activity and the attention span of children at our park (Kameleon special education groups). In some cases, participants played the HoloMoves games independently for nearly half an hour. When you look at the individual cases of the participants, that is actually a very long time—longer than other activities in the daily program. That’s very interesting, of course, because it means that with the help of HoloMoves, clients are able to maintain their concentration (for longer), keep playing, and keep moving on their own—something that’s less successful with other activities.

Can you describe an experience you had with a client? What did you see happen, and how did it affect the client?
One participant in the above study has really stuck with me. A child who, due to behavioral issues, was unable to succeed in a regular classroom setting at a special education school, which led to a transition to a care/education group at our facility a few years ago. This participant is very hyperactive, runs from one place to another, and has a very short attention span. This behavior, therefore, requires the most attention in this case. With HoloMoves, both the support staff and the participant himself were able to participate in a HoloMoves game for an extended period—so long, in fact, that it extended his average attention span. Months later, it was noted that he was also able to maintain his concentration for longer periods during other activities. You could say that HoloMoves was the foundation of this positive development.

What do clients say about HoloMoves?
Clients get excited when HoloMoves is on the daily schedule. They enjoy it and are eager to get started. This is evident from the observations of caregivers and the initiative the clients demonstrate. A large proportion of the clients has difficulty expressing their feelings or emotions in words. The observations and results—particularly from previous studies—show many positive outcomes. The enthusiasm we saw develop among the clients regarding HoloMoves was quantified in those studies.

Why did Siza decide to scale up HoloMoves further after the initial tests?
HoloMoves brought something fresh and innovative—something we didn’t yet have in our program. We love to combine the power of technology with our exercise programs, and HoloMoves is a perfect example of that. In addition, the initial observations during a trial period were very positive. Subsequent internal studies with HoloMoves showed positive effects, and with HoloMoves, we were able to get clients moving more, for longer periods, and more actively. It also proved applicable at various levels within our target group—something that is by no means true of all innovations.

Is there anything else you’d like to say about HoloMoves?
In addition to HoloMoves being a great innovation, the organization is also eager to contribute ideas. Communication channels are short, and we work together to determine how to improve and refine the use of HoloMoves for our target audience. This reflects the enthusiasm that both the organization and the product exude.

By: Joris Schemkes, Movement Therapist & Healthcare Innovator at SIZA How has HoloMoves made a difference at Siza?
